Qiu Ying’s ‘Palace Ladies’ dates from the Qing dynasty, 1644–1911. Ink and color on silk, it is a handscroll. Cleveland Museum of Art.

The handscroll is a classic form in Chinese art, allowing for a sequential viewing experience. This work is part of the museum’s Qing dynasty collection.

Despite being attributed to Qiu Ying, who lived in the Ming dynasty, this painting belongs to the later Qing period. The reasons for this discrepancy remain unexplained.

Qiu Ying was known for the gongbi technique, characterized by precise brushwork. His works were highly sought after by Ming patrons.
