Portrait of Agostino Barbarigo

Paolo Veronese’s “Portrait of Agostino Barbarigo” depicts the Venetian admiral holding a dart. Barbarigo was killed by an arrow at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Painted after c. 1571. Cleveland Museum of Art.

The portrait includes red drapery behind Barbarigo. This may allude to his death. He is shown in armor, gazing pensively.

The Cleveland Museum of Art acquired this painting in 1928 from Italico Brass. It is an oil on canvas.

Veronese, mainly known for large-scale works, often painted smaller portraits like this. He was based in Venice, active during the late Renaissance.
