Turner’s ‘Queen Mab’s Cave’ was painted after 1846. It references Queen Mab from Shakespeare and Shelley’s 1813 poem. The work does not depict a specific scene from either.

The painting is a smaller replica of one exhibited at the British Institution in 1846. It is now part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection.

Turner held the title of Royal Academician by age 27. He was known for his expressive use of light and color, influencing early Impressionists.
