Birds and Flowers

Sesshū Tōyō’s ‘Birds and Flowers’ is part of a triptych. Ink and color on silk. Mid-1400s to early 1500s. This hanging scroll is housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The scroll features detailed depictions of birds amidst floral elements. The use of color is subtle, with an emphasis on the elegance of line work.

Sesshū Tōyō was a Zen monk and painter. He was known for fusing Chinese and Japanese styles, reflecting Zen Buddhist aesthetics.
