Baron FitzGibbon
Gilbert Stuart
Gilbert Stuart painted ‘Baron FitzGibbon’ in 1789. The oil on canvas depicts a member of the Hiberno-Norman FitzGerald dynasty. Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio.
The FitzGeralds, originally Cambro-Norman, became influential in Ireland by the 13th century. They assimilated into Gaelic culture, described as ‘more Irish than the Irish themselves.’
Stuart painted about 1,000 portraits, including six U.S. Presidents. His unfinished portrait of George Washington appears on the U.S. one-dollar bill.
