Dragon and Tiger

Sesson Shūkei’s “Dragon and Tiger” consists of two six-panel folding screens. Ink on paper. Created around 1546–56. Cleveland Museum of Art.

The screens depict a dragon and a tiger, common symbols in East Asian art. These mythical creatures often represent opposing forces.

Sesson Shūkei was a Zen monk and artist. He traveled to Aizu to teach painting to the daimyō Ashina Moriuji in 1546 and 1561.
