Soga Shōhaku painted ‘The Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup’ in the later 1700s. The work consists of a pair of six-panel folding screens. Ink and cut-gold foil on paper. Edo period, Japan.

The screens depict eight figures, each associated with indulgence in wine. The use of cut-gold foil adds a luminous quality to the ink paintings.

Shōhaku’s style drew from the Muromachi period, setting him apart from his Edo period contemporaries. His choice was considered outdated by his peers.
