Study for "Bathers at Asnières"

Seurat’s study for “Bathers at Asnières” is on a wood panel, not canvas. Created around 1883–84, it served as a trial for his later monumental work. Cleveland Museum of Art.

The study uses oil paint. Its dimensions are not listed, but the finished piece is a large canvas. The study shows the development of Seurat’s technique and composition.

Seurat’s “Bathers” was rejected by the Salon in 1884. The finished work is now in the National Gallery, London. The study remains in Cleveland.

Seurat was known for his precise technique and color theory application. He lived only 31 years, yet influenced modern art significantly.
