Wild Geese

Kano Sanraku’s ‘Wild Geese’ is a pair of six-fold screens painted with ink on paper. Created in the late 1500s to early 1600s, it exemplifies the tranquility of nature. Cleveland Museum of Art.

The screens depict wild geese in flight, rendered in a monochrome palette. The arrangement of the birds suggests a seasonal transition, a common theme in Japanese art of the period.

Sanraku was a member of the Kanō school, known for serving the Japanese shoguns. His work blends Momoyama vigor with Edo period refinement.
