Women Meeting in the Shade

Ker Xavier Roussel’s ‘Women Meeting in the Shade’ is an oil on canvas from around 1890. It depicts an outdoor scene with women gathered under trees. The painting is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art collection.

The painting measures 33 x 40 inches. The brushwork is loose, with vibrant colors capturing the dappled light filtering through the leaves.

Roussel often explored the theme of figures in landscapes. This work is typical of his interest in intimate gatherings amid natural settings.

Roussel was associated with Les Nabis, a group of post-impressionist avant-garde artists active in Paris in the 1890s.
