Self-Portrait

Salvator Rosa’s self-portrait, painted around 1647, measures 39 by 31 1/4 inches. Oil on canvas. It resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York.

The painting was bequeathed to the museum by Mary L. Harrison in 1921. Its prior ownership history is not detailed in available records.

Rosa trained in Naples before moving to Rome. He was known for his satirical and dramatic works, often depicting wild landscapes and battle scenes.
