Scenes of Witchcraft

Salvator Rosa’s ‘Scenes of Witchcraft’ was painted around c. 1645–1649. It depicts figures engaged in mysterious rites, set against a dark landscape. Oil on canvas.

The painting measures 82.5 x 120.7 cm. The canvas is dominated by dark tones, with figures and symbols that suggest chaos and the supernatural.

Rosa often chose obscure subjects, such as witchcraft, that were rarely depicted by his contemporaries. His works were known for their dramatic and dark themes.

Salvator Rosa was active in Naples, Rome, and Florence. He was also a poet, satirist, and musician, known for his outspoken personality.
