Girolamo Romanino’s ‘The Flagellation; (reverse) The Madonna of Mercy’ is painted on both sides. Created around ca. 1540. New York.

The medium is distemper and oil on canvas. Both sides of the painting measure 70 7/8 x 47 1/2 inches.

Acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1989. Purchase funded by an anonymous bequest and exchange.

Romanino was active in Brescia, near the Veneto and Lombardy regions. His work spanned several different styles over a long career.
