The painting measures 65.1 x 54.9 cm. It is painted on fabric rather than the more common canvas. The use of fabric gives the surface a different texture.
Renoir’s wife, Aline Charigot, often modeled for his works. It’s unknown if she posed for ‘The Apple Seller’. She was a frequent subject in his paintings throughout their relationship.
Renoir was a leading figure in the Impressionist movement. He had a long career, spanning from the mid-19th century until his death in 1919.
