Patinir often painted landscapes as primary subjects. This work features Saint Jerome in a vast, detailed landscape. The scene includes rocky cliffs, a river, and distant mountains.

The painting was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art through the Fletcher Fund in 1936. It is part of the European Paintings collection.

Patinir was active in Antwerp by 1515 and remained there until his death in 1524. He is known for his landscape painting, a genre he elevated to prominence during the Northern Renaissance.
