A Peasant Family

Antoine Le Nain painted ‘A Peasant Family’ ca. 1640–48. It is oil on copper, measuring 15 by 11 3/4 inches. The painting entered the museum’s collection in 2023.

The Le Nain brothers often worked together, making the attribution of individual works difficult. This painting is specifically attributed to Antoine.

The painting was a gift from Michel David-Weill. It is now part of the European Paintings department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Antoine Le Nain was born in 1588 in Laon and died in 1648 in Paris. He and his brothers produced genre works and portraits in 17th-century France.
