The Immaculate Conception

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo’s ‘The Immaculate Conception’ was painted around c. 1680. It is an oil on canvas, currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The painting measures approximately 274 x 190 cm. Murillo often depicted the Virgin Mary with flowing robes and a celestial background.

This painting entered the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection in 1959. Its provenance before that remains unclear.

Murillo was a Spanish Baroque painter known for religious themes. He also captured everyday life in Seville through portraits of street scenes.
