Tiger

Fachang Muqi’s ‘Tiger’ is a hanging scroll from the Southern Song dynasty. Created c. 1250–79, it features ink and slight color on silk. The Cleveland Museum of Art houses it. The tiger’s form is fluid yet commanding.

The museum lists the painting under China, Southern Song dynasty. Its classification is simply ‘Painting’. A Chan Buddhist monk created this work.

Muqi was a Chan painter whose work influenced later monk painters in Japan. Fachang was his formal name within the monastery system.
