Berthe Morisot’s “Reading” was painted in 1873. The work is oil on canvas. It resides in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Morisot chose a moment of quiet contemplation. A woman is absorbed in a book. The brushstrokes suggest movement and light.

Morisot exhibited at the Paris Salon before joining the Impressionists in 1874. She was the only woman in the first impressionist exhibition.
