Oedipus and the Sphinx

Gustave Moreau’s ‘Oedipus and the Sphinx’ was first shown at the French Salon in 1864. It depicts the encounter between Oedipus and the Sphinx from Sophocles’s play. The painting is oil on canvas, measuring over 81 inches tall.

The painting was well-received at its debut. It is now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s European Paintings collection. William H. Herriman bequeathed it to the museum in 1920.

Moreau focused on mythological and biblical subjects. He was a leading figure in the Symbolist movement. His works often featured complex symbolism and intricate detail.
