The Curious One

Antoine Pierre Mongin’s “The Curious One” is an oil on paper mounted to canvas. Created in 1823, it resides in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The medium is oil on paper mounted to canvas, not a typical choice for large works. Mongin’s selection suggests a focus on detail over scale.

Mongin also designed the 1807 Zuber & Cie scenic wallpaper “l’Hindoustan.” His work was featured on a French postage stamp in 2013.
