Jean-François Millet’s “Return from the Fields” dates to around 1846–47. Oil on fabric. A glimpse into rural life in 19th century France.

The painting measures 38 x 46 cm. It depicts a peasant family on their way back from the fields, carrying tools and baskets.

Millet created this work before settling in Barbizon, where he would later gain recognition for his depictions of peasant life.

Millet was trained as a portraitist in Cherbourg. He shifted focus to rural scenes and became a key figure in the Barbizon school.
