Landscape Near Paris

Georges Michel’s “Landscape Near Paris” was painted around c. 1840. It depicts a cloudy sky over a rural landscape. Oil on fabric. Currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The painting is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s French 19th-century collection. Michel was known for his depictions of the Parisian countryside.

Michel lived from 1763 to 1843, largely working in France. He has been described as a precursor to the Barbizon school, though he is less known today.
