Portrait of a Woman with a Man at a Casement

Fra Filippo Lippi painted ‘Portrait of a Woman with a Man at a Casement’ around ca. 1440. The woman wears a richly embroidered dress. The man is visible only from the shoulders up. Tempera on wood, measuring 25 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches.

The painting is part of the Marquand Collection. It was a gift from Henry G. Marquand to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1889.

Lippi’s use of tempera gives the surface a delicate translucence. The figures are set against a simple architectural background.

Fra Filippo Lippi was a Carmelite priest and painter. He worked primarily in Florence and had notable pupils, including Botticelli.
