Pair of Panels from a Triptych: The Archangel Michael and St. Anthony Abbot

Fra Filippo Lippi’s pair of panels features the Archangel Michael and St. Anthony Abbot. Painted in 1458 using tempera on wood. Originally part of a triptych. Now housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The panels measure 31.8 x 16.2 cm each. They show distinct figures with rich colors and detailed halos. The tempera medium contributes to their luminosity.

The provenance is unclear, but they were acquired by the museum in 1964. Their origin from a larger triptych hints at devotional use.

Fra Filippo Lippi was a Carmelite priest and a painter active during the Italian Renaissance. His workshop taught artists like Sandro Botticelli.
