Poems from the Pavilion of True Meaning

Zhou Lianggong’s ‘Poems from the Pavilion of True Meaning’ dates from 1663 or later. It is an album of twenty-eight leaves, each featuring calligraphy in ink on paper. The album measures 13 7/8 × 8 1/2 × 1 1/2 inches. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The album was a gift to the museum in 2015 from Julia and John Curtis. The paintings are not on canvas but on paper, a choice reflecting the Chinese tradition of calligraphy.

Zhou Lianggong, born in 1612, was a Chinese poet and calligrapher. He held various official roles under the Qing dynasty and faced accusations of corruption. He was imprisoned but later granted amnesty.
