Heroic Landscape with Rainbow

Joseph Anton Koch painted ‘Heroic Landscape with Rainbow’ in 1824. Oil on canvas, it measures 42 3/4 x 37 3/4 inches. The work is part of the European Paintings department.

Purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2008. The acquisition was supported by the Anne Cox Chambers Gift and other funds.

Koch was born in Obergibeln bei Elbigenalp in 1768 and spent much of his career in Rome. He was associated with the German Romantic movement.
