Sabine Houdon (1787–1836)

Jean Antoine Houdon sculpted his daughter, Sabine Houdon, in 1788. The bust is carved from white marble and sits on a gray marble socle. Dimensions without base are 10 3/4 x 8 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches.

The sculpture weighs approximately 20 pounds. With the base, its height increases to 13 1/2 inches. The piece is part of the European Sculpture and Decorative Arts department.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired it in 1950 through the bequest of Mary Stillman Harkness. It remains on display in New York.

Houdon, born in Versailles, was renowned for his portrait busts of Enlightenment figures. He worked primarily in Paris until his death in 1828.
