Meindert Hobbema’s “A Cottage in the Woods” dates to around 1662. Oil on canvas.

The painting captures a typical scene for Hobbema: a sunlit forest with a path leading through dense trees. It measures 38.5 x 51.5 cm.

This work was once part of the Hope Collection of Pictures. Sold in 1898, the collection included 83 paintings.

Hobbema was a student of Jacob van Ruisdael. He produced most of his known work in the 1660s before taking a job as an exciseman in 1668.
