The Antechamber of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio

Francesco Guardi’s ‘The Antechamber of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio’ measures 13 3/8 x 20 inches. Painted ca. 1765–68, it captures an imagined view of Venetian architecture. The support is oil on canvas.

The painting was bequeathed to the museum by Lore Heinemann in 1996, in memory of her husband, Dr. Rudolf J. Heinemann. It is part of the European Paintings department.

Francesco Guardi shifted to vedute, or cityscapes, after his brother’s death in 1760. His later works are known for their lively brushwork and creative architecture.
