Egyptian Family (Sketch for "The Battle of the Pyramids")

Antoine-Jean Gros’s ‘Egyptian Family (Sketch for “The Battle of the Pyramids”)’ is a sketch for ‘The Battle of the Pyramids’. Painted around 1835, it uses oil on linen. The sketch is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art collection.

The painting measures 74.3 x 59.7 cm. Despite its completion around 1835, it was not part of a completed larger work. The museum acquired it in 1972.

Gros was a student of Jacques-Louis David and gained Napoleon’s patronage after his portrait of the commander at Arcole. He was made a baron in 1824.
