Christ on the Cross

El Greco’s ‘Christ on the Cross’ dates from around 1600–1610. Oil on canvas. It is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection.

The painting shows a solitary Christ, illuminated against a dark background. The focus is on the figure, with little extraneous detail.

El Greco moved to Toledo, Spain, in 1577. He spent the rest of his life there, creating many of his notable works.
