Wheat Field with Cypresses

Vincent van Gogh painted ‘Wheat Field with Cypresses’ in 1889. It was part of a series created during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The view was from his window in Saint-Rémy, France.

The painting’s dimensions are 28 13/16 × 36 3/4 inches. It is an oil on canvas. The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired it in 1993.

Van Gogh created three versions of this scene. They were inspired by the Alpilles mountains. The painting features swirling clouds and vibrant colors.

The Annenberg Foundation gifted the painting to the museum. It is part of the European Paintings department.

Vincent van Gogh spent a year at the asylum voluntarily. His stay began in May 1889.
