Cottage Children (The Wood Gatherers)

In 1787, Thomas Gainsborough painted “Cottage Children (The Wood Gatherers).” The oil on canvas measures 58 1/8 x 47 3/8 inches. It was bequeathed by Mary Stillman Harkness in 1950.

The painting depicts children gathering wood in a rustic setting. Gainsborough often portrayed rural life with a sense of idealized simplicity.

Thomas Gainsborough was known for his quick painting style and light palette. Though he excelled in portraits, he found more satisfaction in painting landscapes.
