Madonna and Child

Vincenzo Foppa’s “Madonna and Child” is painted with tempera, oil, and gold on wood. Created around ca. 1480. The dimensions are 17 1/4 x 12 5/8 inches. Part of the Theodore M. Davis Collection since 1915.

The painting shows a tender interaction between Madonna and Child. Gold leaf decorates the halos, a traditional element in religious iconography from this period.

Foppa worked mainly in Lombardy but returned to his native Brescia later in life. He was active from at least 1456 until his death around 1515.
