The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage
Edgar Degas
Degas mixed oil colors with turpentine, adding watercolor and pastel to pen-and-ink on wove paper. This layered technique sits on bristol board mounted on canvas. ca. 1874.
The artwork measures 21 3/8 x 28 3/4 inches. It is part of the H. O. Havemeyer Collection, donated by Horace Havemeyer in 1929.
Degas often depicted ballet dancers in rehearsal. His emphasis was on capturing movement and the behind-the-scenes world of the ballet, not on the performances themselves.
Edgar Degas was born in 1834 and died in 1917. He was known for his innovative compositions and for capturing modern life in the late 19th century.
