The Nativity

Gerard David’s ‘The Nativity’ was painted around c. 1485–90. Oil on wood panel. It is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art collection.

The painting depicts the nativity scene with intricate details typical of Flemish art. The composition is tightly packed and richly colored.

David was active in Bruges and Antwerp, likely running workshops in both cities. His work was largely forgotten by the 17th century.
