Gerard David’s diptych, “Christ Carrying the Cross, with the Crucifixion; The Resurrection, with the Pilgrims of Emmaus,” is oil on oak panel. Completed around ca. 1510.

Each panel measures approximately 34.5 inches in height. The painted surface is slightly smaller. The left wing is 11 5/8 inches wide; the right is 11 3/4 inches wide.

The diptych is part of the Robert Lehman Collection. It was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1975.

Gerard David was active in Bruges and likely Antwerp. His career spanned the turn of the 16th century, and he was successful in his lifetime.
