Gerard David’s “Christ Blessing” measures just 4 3/4 by 3 1/2 inches, including its frame. Painted ca. 1500–1505 in oil on wood. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The painting depicts Christ with his right hand raised in blessing. His left hand holds a globus cruciger, symbolizing the Earth.

The painted surface itself measures 3 5/8 by 2 3/8 inches. The frame is engaged, meaning it is permanently attached to the panel.

David was active in Bruges and possibly Antwerp. He may have been the Meester gheraet van brugghe, a master of the Antwerp guild in 1515.
