Jacques-Louis David painted Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743–1794) and Marie Anne Lavoisier (Marie Anne Pierrette Paulze, 1758–1836) in 1788. Marie-Anne commissioned the portrait. New York, 1788.

Antoine Lavoisier is seated at a desk covered with chemical instruments. His wife stands beside him, her hand on his shoulder. The canvas measures 102 1/4 x 76 5/8 inches.

The painting was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1977. It was a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, in honor of Everett Fahy.

Jacques-Louis David was active through six political regimes in France. He was imprisoned after the fall of Robespierre. Later, he aligned with Napoleon.
