Springtime

Pierre-Auguste Cot’s ‘Springtime’ was painted in 1873. The scene depicts a young couple on a swing. The artist’s use of light creates a soft, romantic atmosphere. Oil on canvas, 83 5/16 × 50 5/16 inches.

The canvas measures over 83 inches in height. It was a gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art from Steven and Alexandra Cohen in 2012.

Cot trained in the French Academic Classicism tradition. He was a pupil of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Alexandre Cabanel.
