Self-Portrait with Hat and Coat

Lovis Corinth’s “Self-Portrait with Hat and Coat” was painted in 1915. Oil on canvas. It’s part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection.

Corinth painted this self-portrait four years after suffering a stroke. His style had shifted to include more expressionistic qualities by this time.

The painting shows Corinth in a dark coat and hat. The brushwork is loose and the colors are vibrant, characteristic of his later work.

Corinth was initially opposed to expressionism. After his stroke in 1911, his style evolved, blending impressionism with expressionism.
