Gillis van Coninxloo’s ‘Landscape with Venus and Adonis’ is painted on copper. Created in the 1580s, it depicts a scene from mythology in a richly detailed landscape. Cleveland Museum of Art.

The painting measures only 14.3 x 19.1 cm. Despite its small size, the detail in the foliage and figures is intricate. This technique was typical for works on copper, allowing for fine brushwork.

This work is part of the 16th-century collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art. It was acquired by the museum in 1962.

Van Coninxloo started his artistic career in Antwerp. He spent his final two decades working outside the Netherlands, influencing Northern landscape art.
