Entertainment Scene

Hanging scroll by Miyagawa Chōshun, ink and color on silk. Created c. 1710–53. Displays an entertainment scene during Japan’s Edo period. Cleveland Museum of Art.

The scroll measures 135.5 cm in height. The silk is mounted on a paper backing. This format was common for Japanese paintings intended for display.

Chōshun founded the Miyagawa school and did not produce woodblock prints. His works mainly depict courtesans, often with fuller figures.

Chōshun trained under masters of the Tosa and Kanō schools and Hishikawa Moronobu, blending influences into his unique style.
