The Oath of Abraham’s Servant

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione painted ‘The Oath of Abraham’s Servant’ c. 1650–59. It is an oil on canvas. The painting is held at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The work depicts a biblical scene with figures and animals. Castiglione often included animals in his paintings, favoring scenes from the Old Testament.

Castiglione was a Genoese Baroque artist. He invented the printmaking technique of monotyping. Known as Il Grechetto in Italy, his works often feature rural scenes.
