The Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John

Hendrick ter Brugghen’s ‘The Crucifixion with the Virgin and Saint John’ dates to around 1624–25. Oil on canvas, 154.9 by 102.2 cm. Acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1956 with funds from various donors.

The painting depicts a dramatic scene with Christ on the cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Ter Brugghen’s use of light and shadow shows Caravaggio’s influence.

The support is canvas, an unusual choice for large Dutch paintings of the time, which often used wood panels.

Ter Brugghen worked in Utrecht and was part of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, a group of artists influenced by Caravaggio’s dramatic style.
