Jiao Bingzhen’s ‘A Vignette of Life on the Frontier’ is painted on a folding fan. Ink and color on paper, c. 1717–22. Qing dynasty, Kangxi period.

The fan captures a lively scene from frontier life, rendered with precision. The figures are detailed, hinting at Western influence from Jiao’s contact with Jesuit astronomers.

Jiao Bingzhen was active from 1689 to 1726. His work blends traditional Chinese painting with Western elements, a rarity in early Qing dynasty art.
