Bihzad illustrated a tale from Tuti-nama, known as ‘The tale of the three men trapped in a cave by a rolling boulder.’ Created c. 1560. Gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper.
The dimensions are not specified. The painting belongs to the Safavid period, during the court of Akbar.
This work is part of a series of illustrations for the Tuti-nama, a collection of stories told by a parrot. It is housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
Bihzad, active in Persia during the mid-1500s, is also known for his work in the royal ateliers of Herat and Tabriz.
