Longcase astronomical regulator

Ferdinand Berthoud’s longcase astronomical regulator was made around 1768–70. The case is oak veneered with ebony and brass, adorned with gilt-bronze mounts. New York.

The dial is white enamel. The movement is crafted from gilded brass and steel. The clock stands over seven feet tall.

The clock resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s European Sculpture and Decorative Arts department, acquired through The Jack and Belle Linsky Collection in 1982.

Berthoud became a master watchmaker in Paris in 1753. He served as Horologist-Mechanic to the King and the Navy.
