The Crucifixion of St. Andrew, with St. Francis and St. Paul below

Berlinghiero’s “The Crucifixion of St. Andrew, with St. Francis and St. Paul below” dates from the c. 1230s. It features tempera and gold on wood. St. Francis and St. Paul appear below the crucifixion scene.

The painting is in the Italo-Byzantine style. The use of gold and tempera was common in this period. It is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection.

Berlinghiero is known from the inscription “Berlingerius me pinxit” on a crucifix. His real name is uncertain. He lived in Lucca and was active in the early 13th century.
